Ok, let’s get this out of the way. bananas are phallic symbols. So, when Groupon featured a product called ‘The Banana Bunker’ on their website and shared it on Facebook, customers went B-A-N-A-N-A-S. The comment section quickly got filled up with sexual innuendos and while most companies would have shut down comments completely, Groupon just rolled with it.
What could be the best example of marketing done well, Groupon and its staff of writers really shined. They quickly responded to every comment with an hilarious response that made reading the comments incredibly entertaining. It also created an high amount of social sharing which is one of the reasons why the product sold out.
