82-Year-Old Walmart Cashier Retires After Viral TikTok Campaign

Who doesn’t love a heartwarming story? I know I do and this one is certainly no exception. Imagine working retail full-time at your local Walmart and then suddenly being at the center of a viral sensation. That is exactly what happened to an 82-year-old Walmart cashier who happened to meet a successful TikToker and his entire world changed.

82-year-old Butch Marion is an exceptional employee at a Walmart in Cumberland, Maryland. Working 40 hours a week as a Walmart cashier, he puts in the same effort as workers decades younger than him. His hard work and resilience paid off though when he helped Rory McCarty, a TikToker with a successful channel named ‘Bug Boys,’ during a visit to the store where McCarty was simply purchasing batteries.

At 82 years of age, Navy veteran Butch Marion was still clocking in 40-hour weeks as a Walmart cashier when he encountered Rory McCarty – an enthusiastic TikTok user – at the Cumberland store.

McCarty decided to start a GoFundMe campaign to help raise enough funds so that Marion could retire happily and without worry. As for his inspiration for starting the campaign, he wrote, “I was shopping at Walmart the other day and was waited on by an 82-year-old man named Butch. As a business owner and knowing how hard it’s been to try to find good help for my business. I was astounded seeing this little older man still grinding. Working 8 to 9-hour shifts.”

Following the viral success of the fundraiser, Rory McCarty delightedly presented the hardworking man with his much-deserved check.

McCarty also said he wanted to start a GoFundMe campaign after seeing a similar campaign on Tik Tok, “Recently seeing a GoFundMe for an 82-year-old lady working at Walmart on Tik Tok, and seeing they raised money for her to retire for good. I wanted to help this Navy Veteran to live the remainder of his years traveling to see his kids in Florida. Get him off his feet for 8 hrs at a time. And do the things he would love to do that he may not be able to for financial reasons.”

Thanks to McCarty and everyone who contributed to the GoFundMe campaign, Butch is now able to go visit members of his family in Florida who he hasn’t seen for years.

After giving his two-week notice to Walmart, his final workday was filled with joy and gratitude, as the veteran was welcomed off the job by cheering employees who were genuinely proud and happy for him. While some employees expect a plaque or a retirement party on their last day, Marion certainly did not expect to get a check worth $108,000!

The hardworking Navy Veteran’s success story serves as an uplifting reminder that hard work pays off. We wish Butch Marion the best of luck in his retirement because he deserves it so much! Congratulations, Butch!
