I think most men and women agree that their brains are wired differently but until now it was only speculation. Researchers at England’s Loughborough University have discovered that women’s brains work harder as they are constantly analyzing, thinking, and sorting through information. Because of this, women may need more sleep than men to recharge. The normally recommended 7 or 8 hours of sleep may not be enough.

Science says that women need more sleep because their brains are more complex and work harder.
Professor Jim Horne, Director of the Speech Research Centre at England’s Loughborough University explains: “For women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger.” Professor Horne adds, “These feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”
Because of this, women require more sleep than men.
The recommended 7 to 8 hours of sleep may not be enough for some women. Professor Horne has discovered that women’s brains are “wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater.”
Tired at work?
Compared to most men, women use their brains more strenuously and are multitasking all the time. Because of this, it takes women more time to recover, which rest provides better than any other activity.

Professor Horne goes on to say, “A man who has a complex job that involves a lot of decision making and lateral thinking may also need more sleep than the average male…though probably still not as much as a woman.”
