Disney’s recent takeover of the streaming market has been nothing short of impressive. In just a few short months, the company has managed to outpace Netflix in terms of subscribers, reaching a total of 221.1 million Disney+ subscribers by the end of July. This is thanks in part to the success of their original content, which has proven to be extremely popular with viewers. Exclusives like Obi-Wan Kenobi and She-Hulk have been extremely well-received by fans.
Interestingly, data from JustWatch shows that Disney’s rise to the top has been mirrored by a corresponding decline in Netflix’s market share. In March, Netflix held 27% of the market, but by June this had fallen to 24%. This suggests that many viewers are gravitating toward Disney content, and away from Netflix.
Disney will also be offering a new choice for subscribers. In December, the monthly price will increase by $3 to $10.99 per month for their current ad-free offering. The new choice will be an ad-supported plan priced at $7.99 per month.

Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, and its promise of delivering the entire Disney catalog was an exciting proposition for Disney fans.
On February 23, 2021, Disney announced that in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and several other markets outside of the United States its content for an older audience will be part of Disney’s ‘Star’ brand. Star is the most recent addition to Disney+ and joins National Geographic, Pixar, Disney Studios, Marvel, and Lucasfilm.
It will be interesting to see how this trend develops in the months to come. Will Disney continue to dominate, or will Netflix stage a comeback? Only time will tell. What do you think of Disney’s rise to the top of the streaming market? Let us know in the comments!
