While technology has arguably made our lives easier, it certainly has made a huge impact in the entertainment realm. The ability to do “virtual duets” is a growing trend thanks to a technology called “rotoscoping”. Rotoscoping is a visual editing technique where a piece of existing video is cut and pasted over another piece of video. One of the first virtual duets I can remember has to be the 1991 performance of Natalie Cole singing an ‘Unforgettable’ duet with her late father Nat King Cole.
On an episode of American Idol, Elvis, the “King of Rock and Roll” sang a duet with Céline Dion. Dion had to practice her performance and pretend that Elvis was performing beside her. She even sang with a body double to ensure her timing was in sync with the original video of Elvis. Then, the Elvis video was superimposed onto Dion’s performance and the end result produced a breathtaking video of Céline Dion and Elvis Presley performing a duet of ‘If I Can Dream’.
