A baby chimp was born on November 15th at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. His mother is Chimpanzee Mahale. Unfortunately, labor stopped progressing and it resulted in a C-section delivery for the baby chimp. After the delivery, he had trouble getting enough oxygen on his own. He spent two days in the zoo’s vet hospital receiving special care from the medical team.
Thankfully, the doctors were pleased with the outcome and even named the baby chimp Kucheza (koo-CHAY-zuh) means “play” in Swahili. The moment when Kucheza was finally reunited with his Chimpanzee mother is absolutely heartwarming. Mahale was seen gently cradling her baby son, offering him comfort and protection. She had been missing him for two days and the reunion between them both was truly touching.

As Kucheza recovers in the hospital, zoo keepers are making sure that Mahale and her baby have time to bond. From snuggling up together in the night to playing and exploring during the day, it’s evident that Mahale is a doting mother who loves her son so much.
The Sedgwick County Zoo staff are also keeping an eye on Kucheza’s progress and are cautiously optimistic that he will make a full recovery. They are hoping that Mahale and Kucheza can eventually join the other chimpanzees in the zoo’s outdoor habitat, so they can experience life as a family.
The birth of baby Kucheza is a reminder of how special and important these animals are, and the zoo staff is dedicated to providing nothing but the best for both of them.
