Actor and comedian Tim Allen, best known for his roles in sitcoms and his handyman skills, has a deep interest in religion and Christianity. I recall watching the pilot episode of ‘Home Improvement’ in 1991 and realizing I was watching a comedian that was going to explode in popularity in the 90s. It certainly didn’t take Tim Allen very long. During this time, Allen also starred in several popular films, including “The Santa Clause” in 1994, “Toy Story” in 1995, in which he voiced the character of Buzz Lightyear; and “Galaxy Quest” in 1999. But even with all this success, Tim Allen’s passion and what led to all his success is stand-up comedy and his relationship with God.
He often references his Catholic upbringing in his stand-up comedy. In fact, he even jokes about his childhood struggles to concentrate during catechism class. Allen’s father died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver when he was just 11 years old. This event led him to question the existence of God and the effectiveness of prayer.

Despite his initial cynicism, Allen has since developed a curious and evolving relationship with God. He often refers to God as “The Builder” when he discusses his relationship with God. He often asks God for guidance and is actively involved with several charities. Allen believes that his life experiences, including his father’s death and his own struggles with addiction and legal troubles, are too significant to have happened by accident, reinforcing his faith in a higher power.
In an interview with “20/20” anchor Elizabeth Vargas, Allen expressed his ongoing fascination with religion. He also discusses his belief that he has been uniquely “built” by a higher power. Though he has had his share of doubts and struggles, Allen’s faith continues to inform his life and work. His strong faith leads him to seek out opportunities to give back and make a difference in the world.
