I remember playing The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System way back in 1987. At the time, it seemed like just another new title from Nintendo but I didn’t anticipate that it would define role-playing games and fantasy adventure games in general for years to come. But it wasn’t until 1997 when Ocarina of Time was released on the N64 that Zelda would become my favorite Nintendo franchise of all time. Zelda memes also didn’t exist in 1997 but fast forward over 25 years later and Zelda memes are a thing.
Fun fact: Did you know Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda because he was such a fan of the original Legend of Zelda game? Of course, there wouldn’t be Zelda memes (or games) if it wasn’t for that brave hero, Link. Link is just as important as Zelda if not more so as gamers play as Link in almost all Legend of Zelda games. For that reason, you’ll also see Link in most Zelda memes.
