While we often read about doom and gloom stories about the coronavirus that has a current worldwide death rate of 2 to 4%, the media generally isn’t so quick to offer stories of hope. While the population most at risk are individuals over the age of 60 with underlying health problems, some of them are beating the odds. One person is 90-year-old Geneva Wood, a resident at the Life Care Center in Washington.
Geneva Wood beat the novel coronavirus with the support of her family, her faith in God, and some nourishing potato soup. Speaking to Good Morning America, Wood said, “I beat the coronavirus. I have a lot to live for, and God gave me the strength to do it.”
Geneva Wood has five kids, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Wood, a mother of five, was at Life Care Center nursing facility recovering from a stroke. The nursing facility was hit hard by the coronavirus and thirty-five patients died from the coronavirus. She was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 6th and was moved to a local hospital on March 11th.

There, she was allowed to have one visitor at a time and her family brought her some of her favorite comfort food, homemade potato soup. One of her daughters, Cami Neidigh, told GMA, “She had gone about a week without eating and once we were able to get her some soup and once she was able to see us through the window, she really rallied,” said Neidigh. “It’s her comfort food.”
Woods is set to recover at her daughter’s home after being discharged from the hospital.
Roughly 3 weeks after being first diagnosed, Geneva Wood received the news she was waiting for from her doctors, she had beaten COVID-19 and was on the road to recovery. “They called, said we could come up and give her a hug,” said Neidigh. “She gave me the longest, hardest hug that I’ve ever had in my life.” Geneva Wood is expected to recover at her daughter’s home and return to the nursing facility when the virus outbreak is under control.

According to an NPR article, the rate of people not recovering from the novel coronavirus will drop as more testing is done. Once a broad section of the population has been tested, the coronavirus is expected to have an overall death rate of 0.5 to 1%. While many people have succumbed to the virus, our hearts and prayers go out to all families personally affected by the novel coronavirus.
