Fall Asleep in under a Minute by Learning This Ancient Breathing Technique

Learn how to fall asleep quickly by learning the 4-7-8 breathing technique.

If you have a wedding to attend or starting a new job, getting a good night’s sleep before the big day can be a little difficult. When we’re stressed out, our anxiety levels are high, adrenaline is rushing through our veins, and our heart beats much faster. In ancient India, breathing exercises have been used for thousands of years to relax the body and bring us into a state of relaxation.

According to an article on Byrdie, editor Alina Gonzalez claims she learned to fall asleep in less than a minute using the 4-7-8 breathing exercise. Her friend, a licensed wellness practitioner told her to perform the following steps four times consecutively:

  1. Breath through your nose for 4 seconds
  2. Hold your breath for 7 seconds
  3. Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds

The 4-7-8 breathing technique has recently been popularized by holistic health expert Andrew Weil. In the following video, he demonstrates the same technique he teaches at many speaking engagements.
